With so many of the Vamos Brigade hailing from the UK it will come as no surprise to learn that we were out in force to support Rafa for these two weeks at the start of what is laughably known as our summer.
There was at least one representative at every match bar the quarter finals which is a considerable achievement given the difficulties in getting a ticket at all. We also hoped that he was cheered by the number of eager faces pressed up against the wire netting during his practise sessions.
The more resilient members of the brigade spent a few wet days and nights waiting patiently in the overnight queue. It’s the best way of getting the seats you want on the court you want but does require a certain amount of grit to get you through the tedium on a diet of takeaway pizzas and an average of 4 hours sleep per night. Once you’ve done it once, though, you tend to be hooked and vow to return next year with even more equipment to add to your comfort.
You may have noticed that it was rather wet at Wimbledon this year. Although a nightmare for the players, particularly those in the bottom half of the draw, it did have advantages for the fans. A few lucky members found that the tickets they had received in the ballot gave them an opportunity to see Rafa that they hadn’t expected. A ticket for the second Thursday would normally give you the women’s singles semi-finals but this year he was out on court 2 where people could see him for the price of ground admission. This wins the bargain of the week award.
A close runner up was the semi-final since that was played on court 1 where the ticket for that day was priced at less than the main show courts at the beginning of the tournament. The two members who shot up to SW19 for that one were amazed at just how few people were aware of this golden opportunity. Semi finals are usually next to impossible to see if you haven’t got a ticket in the ballot so this was very special. After next year it won’t happen again since the Centre Court Roof will enable all important matches to be played out to schedule.
